Naming the day you became a christian

October 6th, 2008 by Gary Dickenson

Summer camp many moons ago I remember asking the question to a leader at the time “so how do I know if I’m a Christian or not?”. His reply was something like “well you can normally tie it down to a single event and time that you know and if you don’t then you probably aren’t”.

So off I went and later in the day I said the prayer, you know the one that you need to say to become a Christian, the one that’s not in the bible yet seems to be mandatory to get your tickets into heaven. I know the prayer thing might be helpful to some but it’s equally unhelpful to assume it’s absolutely necessary. Well nothing miraculous happened, and in fact I’m sure nothing happened at all. Well other than some clarity was gained in responding to the question from earlier that day.

It’s not until some 12 years later that in reflection I realise that some time between when I first started going to church and this point now is when I became ‘Christian’ , well that’s not even true really. what happened was that I somehow realised that Jesus was the way and the life for me and so decided to follow Him, becoming Christian kind of has a lot of baggage attached that I don’t really dig. There was no one moment and I guess the structuring of that following/belief in the above sentence still takes place day by day week by week year by year as I continue to ‘try’ to follow Him.

I realised that for many this is the case. They can not name the exact day, time
