Opening Gambit…

August 1st, 2008 by Gary Dickenson

Well here we are the first post of Baltic Journeys. Thought I’d start by answering a few questions about why I’m here doing this blog etc and then that would make a good opening act for the rest of the show (so to speak).

Why Baltic journeys?

Well My wife, Gita is Latvian and we lived in Latvia for 3 years and we recently moved back to the uk to start a new part in our life journey here in Cromer, North Norfolk. So there’s the baltic connection and besides its’ a nice enough name so why not :)

Why have you decided to start blogging?

Well since living in Latvia (over 3 years ago) and moving back to the uk in Jan I’ve been wanting to blog, many of my contemporaries and piers were blogging so it seemed an obvious step. It’s been a time of transition and change for me in so many ways and many of the thoughts I had then were mixed up and incoherent. I’m now ready to put digital pen to digital paper and get something out there and ….

What’s the blog about?

Err well a few things really I guess primarily the Christian church in our locality here in north Norfolk and the UK but interspersed with bits and bobs about Latvia & the Baltics as well. It’s about how we’re facing the transition from modernity to post-modernity and all that is entailed in that including the subject of the emerging church. Carefully placed in-between those posts I’ll be regurgitating a lot of stuff that I’ve read, or heard or seen over the past 3 years as I think it’s valuable and is heading for a new audience who hopefully will benefit from it. Then the blog will be about me and Gita (my wifey) and our goings ons + some other random thoughts and a good pinch of technology stuff as well.

What do you hope to achieve with the blog?

I guess firstly to stay in touch with people around the world who know me and what to know what’s happening over here. Then of course I hope to stimulate some interesting conversation between church leaders, Christians, ‘cultural transition’ thinkers, and anyone who wants to take part really. I want to provide some resources as well.
